The Library at Freemasons' Hall holds a letter dated 25th May 1945 from W.Bro. H.W.G. Pulford, a member of the London Society of Organists, to the Grand Secretary of UGLE, explaining why certain masonic brethren wished to found a new lodge "of competent organists".
"We all felt that the standard of organ-playing in lodges was not always what it might be, and that a Lodge, such as we had in mind, would do much to improve the standard by the influence it would undoubtedly shed over all who came into contact with it".
Thus the Lodge was founded for "competent" organists so that their playing would be an example to others, primarily the visitors to the Lodge. We have counted plenty of Grand Organists, Deputy Grand Organists and Provincial Grand Organists among our number.
The Lodge was consecrated on St Cecilia's Day, 22nd November, 1945.
The breadth of our membership has developed since 1945 to include singers, conductors, and more widely to those who enjoy and appreciate music. Our current membership numbers 30, and we are always keen to hear from musicians or others with an interest in music.
